New Era for HC-One with Appointment of New Chief Executive Officer
HC-One, the UK’s third largest care home provider is preparing for the next phase of its journey with the appointment of Justin Hutchens as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Hutchens has spent his twenty-three year career in the healthcare sector in the United States and he will be joining HC-One on 1st June 2017 from HCP Inc. where he was President and previously Executive Vice-President and Chief Investment Officer. He will then commence a handover process with current Chairman and CEO, Dr Chai Patel CBE FRCP which will conclude on the 30th September 2017. Dr Patel, who founded HC-One in 2011, will thereafter continue as HC-One Chairman.
Justin brings to the role a rare combination – 15 years in healthcare operations followed by 8 years in healthcare (REIT) investment. Since 2009 he has operated at the highest level of healthcare investment culminating in his latest role at HCP Inc. Remarkably and notably, Justin started his career as a front line carer. He shares many values with Dr Chai Patel who started life working as an NHS Junior Doctor. Both have a deep professional vocation to making a difference to the lives of older people and are passionate supporters of HC-One’s commitment to providing the kindest care and to making HC-One homes the first choice provider in local communities.
Justin’s appointment completes the succession planning at HC-One. Aged 42, he is to lead HC-One through the next crucial phase in its journey from turnaround to transformation. The UK care sector is poised for significant and dramatic change over coming years as the health and social care environment continues to integrate in order to ensure that older people receive the right services in the right place at the right time. Crucially given this challenge, Justin brings to HC-One significant experience of changes that have occurred in the US care landscape, notably addressing ever-changing demographics, public expectation, and government responsibilities. This experience will prove invaluable in guiding HC-One as it develops new services as part of an improved health and social care offering.
Under Justin’s leadership, HC-One will continue to seek to provide the very best and kindest care across its homes. He will also be charged with building on HC-One’s 9.3 average rating on the sector’s leading care home comparison website www.carehome.co.uk<http://www.carehome.co.uk>. The rating puts HC-One homes into the very best company in the care home sector. HC-One has a very successful relationship with HCP, who provided the finance for the 2014 acquisition sponsored by Formation Capital, Safanad and Court Cavendish.
Dr Chai Patel, CBE, FRCP, HC-One Chairman, said:
“On behalf of all colleagues at HC-One I am delighted to welcome Justin to the HC-One family. I am excited to be working with someone with such a similar value base and we have appointed in him a person who started his career as a care assistant, only to then rise to the highest levels and become an industry leader.
”I consider him a care and investment professional of global significance with outstanding leadership qualities. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. It is obvious that he shares HC-One’s values and commitment to providing high quality kind care. I look forward to welcoming Justin and working with him to continue to build HC-One and develop our leading position in the UK care sector.”
Justin Hutchens said:
“I am absolutely delighted and excited to be taking up this new role at HC-One. It is an extraordinary business at an extraordinary time for care in the UK. It is an honour to follow in the footsteps of Dr Patel who has led HC-One with tremendous expertise, professionalism and integrity while driving a culture of kindness throughout the organisation. I am looking forward to contributing to a bright future for HC-One.”
