Kenny Atkinson reportedly refused the Hornets to stay with the Warriors

The Charlotte Hornets“The search for coaching isn’t over yet. Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson has reportedly changed his mind and won’t become the Hornets’ next coach, according to ESPN’s Adrian Vojnarowski.

Instead, Atkinson will continue to serve as an assistant coach with the Warriors.

It is unclear what changed between Atkinson and the Hornets. In mid-June, it was reported that The Hornets agreed in principle To hire Atkinson. He will reportedly get a four-year deal from the team, according to Wojnarowski. Things seem to have collapsed after the two sides had “more talks”.

News of Atkinson’s rejection of the Hornets comes days after the Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. This was Atkinson’s first season with the team, and his first championship as an assistant coach.

Prior to joining the Warriors, Atkinson spent several years as an assistant coach with the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. He was appointed head coach for the Brooklyn Nets prior to the 2016-17 NBA season. After struggling through the first two seasons, the Nets changed things in the third year.

Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant joined the club that season, but Atkinson was fired after leading the team to a record 28-34 during the 2019-20 season. Durant has not played this season due to an Achilles tendon injury. Irving played only 20 games for the team.

With Atkinson out, the Hornets will be tasked with finding a new replacement for James Borrego, who was launch the team in April.
