Ukrainian officials say humanitarian convoys have been stopped and raided by Russian forces. Here’s what we know

Russian Troops withdrew from Chernobylthe site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, the state institution that oversees Ukraine’s nuclear power plants said Thursday.

“It was confirmed that the occupiers, who had captured the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the exclusion zone, marched in two columns towards the Ukrainian border with the Republic of Belarus,” Energoatom said in a statement posted on Telegram.

On April 26, 1986, an explosion occurred at Reactor No. 4 in Chernobyl, killing 30 people on the spot. Countless others died of radiation symptoms in the years that followed.

In late February, during the first week of the war, the plant and the surrounding lands fell into the hands of Russian troops.

Russian forces on Thursday announced their intention to leave and hand control over to Ukrainian personnel, Energoatom said.

It also published a copy of an official letter allegedly signed by a representative of the Russian National Guard, a representative of the Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom and the shift manager of the Chernobyl plant, entitled “The procedure for acceptance and transfer of protection of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant”.

“The administration of the protected facility does not make any claims in relation to the forces of the National Guard of the Russian Federation,” the letter said.

Radiological claims: Energoatom’s Telegram statement said that a few “rashists” – a Ukrainian slander for Russians that combine the words “fascist” and “racist” – remained at the station.

“It is worth noting that the information about the fortifications and trenches built by the militants in the Red Forest, the most polluted in the entire exclusion zone, was also confirmed,” Energoatum said.
“It is therefore not surprising that the occupiers received large doses of radiation and panicked at the first sign of illness. This manifested itself very quickly. As a result, almost a riot broke out among the military, and they began to gather from there, the statement continued.

CNN was not immediately able to verify these claims.
